Whether you just ran your first 5k or your 10th marathon, a massage is a great way to recover. Immediately after the race is a great way to help your muscles recover, but BEWARE! There are certain times when getting a massage will not help! In fact, you may experience a great deal of pain during a simple relaxation massage!
If you are struggling with soreness the next 2 or 3 days, do NOT get a massage, especially nothing deep. It just hurts too much and it is not going to help your Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). A relaxation massage can even be too much for some people at this stage. Some intentional stretching can help, but it is best to wait approximately 24-36 hours before seeking a massage after a big event.
Also, if you've been training hard, it is possible to be dealing with nagging injuries or you might have run into problems with your latest long run. If you are strained, sprained, or have any issues that just won't seem to go away with some TLC, be sure to visit your physician for a closer look. Get the help you need asap! It will make a huge difference in the long run! You can still get a massage if you are nursing an injury, but be aware that your therapist will likely avoid working on or below the affected area.
